Michael J. Fox Urges Americans to Participate in Research Trials
Michael J. Fox says "Scientific progress starts with us." He urges Americans to participate in clinical trials in a recent article written in the San Francisco Chronicle. "Today, America is waiting expectantly for a new generation of scientific breakthroughs- in cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer's disease, and of course, Parkinson's disease. Yet we've lost sight of a critical element of any success - own own active engagement in the process" Fox says. "Across all diseases, according to 2003-2004 research at the National Institutes of Health, 85 percent of clinical trials finish late because of trouble recruiting volunteers." Meanwhile, almost "a third of trials fail to recruit a single subject and cannot ever begin." He says that everyone can help to find cures for diseases "by donating, volunteering or participating in a trial."
