Heath and Fitness: Make Time for Physical Activity in Your Life

We all live hectic lives: between work, family, friends, volunteering, managing a household, and other activities that take up our time and our focus, we often don’t have the hours to spare for a trip to the gym or a long run. However, there are plenty of ways to add exercise to a busy day without giving up family time – or sleep time!

  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator
  • If you work in an office setting, take a brisk walk outside during lunch
  • If you can’t get out during lunch, take a walk after dinner
  • Pull your kids in a wagon around the neighborhood, or join their game of basketball or soccer in the yard
  • Do stretches, yoga, or Pilates while you are watching TV; or do a few reps of sit-ups or push-ups during each commercial break.
If you prefer group activities, there are often community events taking place that are free for you to join. For example, September 25 is the 12th Annual Women’s Health and Fitness Day, and September 28 is the 17th Annual Family Health and Fitness Day.

Both of these national events are conducted by the Health Information Resource Center. Local organizations throughout the country will host health and fitness events at senior centers, schools, parks & recreation districts, hospitals, YMCAs/YWCAs, malls, health clubs, places of worship, retirement communities and other community locations.
